Having a balanced and as natural as possible diet is the best option, not only for humans but also for pets. In their diet, in addition to the food made with kibble, there is the possibility of including meals with natural foods that also help with their well-being.

From fruits to healthy carbohydrates, the possibilities are varied, but it is important to understand the differences in alternatives and know how to moderate the offer to the little ones. Thiago Teixeira, the general director of Nouvet, an excellent veterinary center in São Paulo, explains that while traditional dry kibble is offered in their diet, natural meals are offered as completely natural meals, such as vegetables, meat, and vegetables.
Owners who do not opt for natural meals can offer food in the form of treats. “Providing natural food also contributes to a balanced diet, always taking into account the particularities of each pet. It is even encouraged as a practice because it can bring nutritional benefits, as well as well-being and longevity,” he comments.
Steam-cooked foods, free of preservatives or chemical components, have been viable options for families and veterinary centers. Nouvet has a partnership with A Quinta, a company that provides 100% natural food for dogs, steam-cooked and without the need for refrigeration for pets, always ensuring the correct nutritional balance. The company provides products for the pets in their care and for those in Nouvet’s school.
In addition to acquiring natural products from reliable companies, it is important for families to understand which foods available at home are actually allowed. With that in mind, Thiago Teixeira lists some that can be given to pets. Check it out:
Fruits
Rich in vitamins, fiber, and water, fruits are usually well-received by dogs and cats: apples, pears, and bananas are the main ones. In addition to offering them in small pieces, a good way to provide this type of natural treat is to make popsicles in warmer times. You just need to mix the fruit with water, put it in molds, freeze it, and give it to your pet. This way, besides consuming a healthy food, it will be hydrating and entertaining itself with licks.
Most fruits are allowed, but some have restrictions, such as grapes, which should be avoided as they contain toxic substances for pets.
Vegetables and greens
Because they are rich in fiber and antioxidants, and have less sugar, vegetables and greens are also welcome as snacks. Some excellent vegetables for pets include raw carrots, which help clean their teeth, and zucchini, which, if well cleaned, raw and with the skin, can help with vision and skin.
In the category of greens, lettuce is well recommended, as it is a source of calcium and vitamin A, as well as helping with bone and intestinal tract maintenance.
Healthy carbohydrates
Many pets, especially dogs, hang around the table asking for food during family meals. Even if they are not treats, it is important to know which types of carbohydrates are allowed for them to consume. Always considering well-cooked and unseasoned, grains like brown rice, oats, and quinoa provide nutrients and energy. Baked or boiled potatoes, free of seasonings, are also a good option, providing B and K complex vitamins, phosphorus, and potassium.
“All food needs to be given to pets in moderation and, more than that, always based on the guidance of a veterinarian. Before offering different foods, consult with the professional about the contraindications and peculiarities of each pet. Also, of course, find out if your little friend has allergies or sensitivities to foods,” adds the director of Nouvet.
