Giardiasis, a parasitic disease of the gastrointestinal tract common in dogs and cats, is caused by the protozoan Giardia duodenalis.

Although it is often asymptomatic, it can manifest in some animals through diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss. These symptoms can range from mild to severe, and in advanced cases or in animals with compromised immune systems, it can be life-threatening.

Responsible for approximately 1 billion cases of diarrhea worldwide, Giardia can be transmitted when animals ingest food or water contaminated with cysts of the parasite. “These cysts can be excreted in the feces of infected pets and survive in the environment for long periods. Pets can contract them from various sources, whether at home or in other environments,” explains Marília Scauri Costa, product manager at Pearson Saúde Animal.

Preventing giardiasis in dogs and cats involves measures similar to those recommended for humans, such as ensuring clean drinking water and safe food and maintaining good hygiene practices, especially with water and food bowls. This includes a strict routine of cleaning the areas where the animals live and play, with proper treatment of the animals’ feces by collecting and disposing of them regularly and safely.

“It is important for owners to be aware that the risk of infection is real and to take measures to ensure their best friends have access to clean water sources. It is necessary to avoid contact with water sources where hygiene cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, extra caution is needed during walks and outdoor activities, where there is a greater availability of potentially contaminated liquids,” says Marília.

In addition to prevention and daily water cleaning by the owners, it is important to highlight the contribution of solutions like Helmiben from Pearson Saúde Animal. It acts quickly against worms and Giardia duodenalis. With split tablets, it is also safe for puppies from 15 days old.
