For the second consecutive year, the French Bulldog claimed the first place as the favorite dog of Americans. According to the AKC, the popularity of the French Bulldog is explained by the fact that they are affectionate, playful, adaptable dogs with a balanced temperament.

The breed is also the best choice for city dwellers, as they get along well with almost everyone and can live comfortably in smaller apartments. Additionally, they also have a short coat that is easy to care for.

“Their long list of fabulous characteristics makes them wonderful companions for a variety of people, but that doesn’t mean they are for everyone,” emphasized Gina DiNardo, executive secretary of the AKC, in a press release.

“It is extremely important to not only do your research to find the right breed for your lifestyle, but also to ensure that you are acquiring a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder,” she added.

Before 2022, the Labrador Retriever was named the AKC’s leading dog for at least three decades. In the new research, it came in second place. The top 5 of the ranking also includes the Golden Retriever, the German Shepherd, and the Poodle.

The AKC emphasized that the popularity of a breed does not determine its compatibility with the owner. They advised potential owners to consider a dog’s temperament, size, and energy level before deciding to adopt.
