A family from California, United States, has reunited with their pet donkey, Diesel, five years after he disappeared during a routine walk in 2019.

Terrie and Dave Drewry lost Diesel near Cache Creek in Auburn, Alabama, and despite intense search efforts, they were unable to find him again.

In June 2024, they recognized Diesel through a video filmed by a hunter named Max Fennell, showing the donkey living among a herd of wild elk.

The video, which went viral on social media, shows Diesel looking happy and healthy alongside the elk. The Drewrys were relieved to see that their donkey was well, adapted to wild life, and seemingly protected by the elk.

Terrie and Dave also believe that Diesel protects the herd of elk from predators such as coyotes and possibly mountain lions. They say it would now be nearly impossible to capture the donkey, as he has become a true wild donkey.
