With the release of iOS 17, Apple introduced a new feature to the iPhone Photos app that allows you to tag and add pets to the “people and pets” album, previously only called “people”.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, 97% of pet owners consider their pets part of the family. Fortunately, Apple agrees and wrote online that “dogs and cats… are also part of your family”.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to tag your pets in the new “People and Pets” album:
- Open your Photos app;
- Tap on Albums;
- Tap on the People and Pets album;
- Tap on the photo of your pet;
- Tap Add name to enter your pet’s name;
- Tap Next.
Your phone may prompt you to review your pet’s photos to ensure they’re being identified correctly.
After reviewing your pet’s photos, you can add them to your favorites by tapping the heart next to your pet’s photo in the “People and Pets” album.
Now, your iPhone with iOS 17 should recognize your pet and automatically add photos of it to the “People and Pets” section.
However, technology isn’t perfect and may misidentify your pet. If this happens, here’s how to untag your pet from a photo:
- Open your Photos app;
- Tap on Albums;
- Tap on the People and Pets album;
- Tap on your pet;
- Long-press the incorrectly identified photo of your pet;
- Tap This is not [your pet’s name].
