Kevin, the Great Dane recently recognized by Guinness World Records as the ‘tallest dog in the world’, has died just days after setting the world record.

According to Guinness World Records, the three-year-old dog, who lived with his family in West Des Moines, Iowa, became ill and passed away this week after an unplanned surgery.

“Our whole family is devastated. He was simply the best giant boy,” said Kevin’s owner, Tracy Wolfe, in a statement.

“We are so glad he managed to break the record and get that spotlight. He loved the attention. I wish these giant breeds, and all dogs, could live longer than they do. It’s never enough time.”

Kevin achieved his record by measuring 0.97 meters tall from feet to withers (the highest point between the shoulder blades), but stood over 2 meters tall when on his hind legs, according to Guinness World Records.

The average Great Dane stands about 0.76 meters from feet to withers, but when Kevin stood on his hind legs, he towered over his other owner, Roger Wolfe.
