The clip features a compilation of moments where owners sneakily placed cucumbers near their cats while they were distracted. Upon noticing the presence of the vegetable, all the felines became terrified, jumping or running away.
“Why are cats so afraid of cucumbers?” says the text inserted alongside the video, which has already received over 11 million views, along with more than 430 thousand likes and thousands of comments from internet users who found the scene amusing.
“How do they fling their bodies like that?” queried an Instagram user. “That first cat successfully landed on the moon,” joked another. “Glad they didn’t overreact,” quipped a third internet user. “Even I’m afraid of that U-shaped cucumber,” admitted one more.
But why are cats afraid of cucumbers? Jill Goldman, an animal behavior expert, shared her hypotheses with National Geographic, explaining that cucumbers trigger cats’ natural startle reflexes.
Goldman also added that cats may associate the shape and length of cucumbers with snakes, which could explain their fearful reaction. “With a startle response, a cat usually tries to get out of there as quickly as possible and then reevaluate from a distance,” explained Goldman.
