Have you ever wondered why your cat enjoys sleeping at your feet? According to an animal behaviorist, this behavior is related to the vulnerability they feel during the night.
According to Erin Askeland, an animal behavior and health consultant at Camp Bow Wow, cats do this for two main reasons: instinct and vulnerability.

“When a cat goes to sleep, their guard is lowered, and they know they are more vulnerable. So often, cats may choose to sleep at the foot of the bed for safety and protection, to alert you if they sense a threat, and to protect you,” Erin told POPSUGAR website.
“The foot of the bed also provides a quicker escape, which is part of the cat’s instincts. In contrast, at the head of the bed or even inside the blankets, that escape route is not as clear. Often, the foot of the bed is semi-centralized in a room, so it not only gives the cat an overview but also the ability to move in any direction quickly as needed,” she added.
While it makes sense that a cat would sleep at the end of the bed, why do they choose to sleep on your feet instead of the available space in the region?
“Although cats can be independent creatures, they like those who support them and are still quite sociable. They know who provides them with food, water, and treats, who plays with them, and who gives them attention. So, they will seek that person (or people) to be close to and offer affection in return or appease you to continue taking care of them,” she said.
However, Erin emphasized that it’s not all just affection and love. “Cats can also use you simply for your warmth! That may be why some cats come to your head or body during the night and then return to the foot of the bed. As your body temperature changes, your cat may move to warmer (or cooler) spots depending on their own needs.”
