Going on vacation and leaving your best friend behind might seem like a bad idea, but experts say it can sometimes be the best thing you can do for your pet.
Dr. Christine Rutter, clinical professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, explained that although their company can make you feel good, it’s more important to prioritize what’s best for your pet’s comfort and overall well-being.
Pets accompanying their owners on vacation trips should feel secure and not as though they are being removed from the routines that bring them comfort and stability.
Every pet has a unique personality, so owners should assess their pet’s comfort level with traveling before embarking on a major trip.
“Traveling can be stressful for everyone, including your pet. Pets can also sense their owner’s stress,” Rutter told Pet Talk from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University.
To mitigate this stress, Rutter suggests that owners be prepared and aware of all the stipulations that traveling with pets might involve, including knowing the requirements for bringing animals across state and national borders.
“With international travel, some countries may require sequential blood tests for infectious diseases or a quarantine period, and some may prohibit the importation of certain types of animals. Therefore, it is vital to start preparing for international travel at least six months in advance,” she explained.
Researching rules and regulations in advance is not only important for taking pets to other countries but also for ensuring they can return home safely at the end of the trip.
For owners who decide not to travel with their pets, boarding services and pet sitters are great options to ensure your furry friend doesn’t feel neglected during your absence.
If you’re unsure which decision to make, consult your veterinarian to discuss which option best suits your pet’s emotional and physical needs.
