A cat thrown from the balcony of the 12th floor of a building in the United States has survived after receiving intensive treatment at an animal sanctuary.

Rue is recovering after sustaining multiple broken bones in the fall that occurred on June 24th in a building in Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to a police report.
The tabby cat, named after the French word for street, was called “brave and resilient” by Lisa LaVerdiere, whose nonprofit animal sanctuary Home For Life Animal Sanctuary is caring for the feline.
“It appears she will overcome the cruelty she endured, being thrown from a balcony without regard for her life,” wrote LaVerdiere, executive director of the sanctuary, in a press release on Tuesday.
Rue’s injuries include two broken legs and fractures in the jaw, according to LaVerdiere. She underwent leg surgery on the night she was taken in by the sanctuary and was fed through a gastric tube.
In a follow-up post on the Facebook page of the sanctuary, they said she underwent a procedure to wire her canine teeth on both sides of the jaw to stabilize the fractured bones for healing.
Despite jaw injuries, Rue “is still attempting to eat canned food, even with a damaged mouth, and even grooming herself despite her legs being in casts,” LaVerdiere shared.
Police closed Rue’s case without anyone being held responsible. Nasteho Abdi, who lives on the eighth floor of the building, said she and her sister found the injured cat and alerted Minneapolis Animal Care and Control.
“The fact that cruelty to animals on this scale is happening, and without apparent consequences, needs to be brought to light. We hope today marks a turning point for her and that she is on the path to healing and a life of love and care,” Home For Life sanctuary added.
