On her Instagram profile, Juliana DeWillems, owner and head trainer of JW Dog Training, shared that a change in behavior should be expected by dog owners during the holiday season.

“Disruption in routine and/or new environments can cause behavior changes due to excitement or stress,” explained the expert. With that in mind, if you know that your dog’s routine is going to change drastically, make a plan in advance to prepare for it.

“Pack any supplies your dog would benefit from, and proactively think about how to set up the environment to support your dog,” DeWillems suggested. She also emphasized the importance of setting boundaries for those approaching your pet.

Your uncle or cousin may have experience dealing with dogs, but you know your pup better than anyone. Only you can know when he has had enough interaction for a while or when he needs a walk, for example.

It’s a good idea to give your dog a place where he can go when he needs some alone time, away from the noise and hustle of everyone. This may be easier in your home than if you are visiting relatives, but it’s still worth asking the homeowner if there’s a place where your pup can have a bit of peace and quiet.
