A study by researchers from the University of Guelph in Canada revealed that different dog breeds tend to have varying physical attributes and strengths, including the strength of their bite.

So, here are the dog breeds that the research showed to have the strongest bites, measured in pounds per square inch (psi). For reference, the average human bite is about 162 psi.
1. Kangal
The Kangal has the strongest bite of any dog breed, measuring 743 psi. This makes them particularly good at protecting livestock from predators in Turkey, where they were bred, but the breed is also known to be a great family dog when properly trained, getting along very well with children.

2. Dogue de Bordeaux
The Dogue de Bordeaux has a daunting bite strength of 556 psi, although this breed is notoriously so lazy that it’s unlikely to use it often.
3. Mastiff
The impressive 552 psi bite of the Mastiff has been used to great effect over the years in everything from guarding villages to hunting wolves. Nowadays, however, they are just gentle giants used as family dogs.
4. Leonberger
Another gentle giant, the Leonberger will likely use its 399 psi bite for chewing sticks, toys, and perhaps their owners’ shoes.
5. Rottweiler
The jaws of the Rottweiler can deliver a bite up to 328 psi. They are generally a calm and gentle breed but are more suited for more experienced owners.
6. German Shepherd
Famously one of the top dogs for police forces and armies, the German Shepherd can apply a 238 psi bite if needed while on duty.
7. Boxer
Don’t let the Boxer’s relatively strong 230 psi bite make you think they’re not a good family dog; they’re great with humans of all ages, though they can become aggressive towards other animals.
8. Dobermann
Also known as Doberman Pinscher, the Dobermann has a bite strength of 229 psi for this dog and is a great watchdog, although it’s a breed that should be avoided by families with young children.
9. Chow Chow
The Chow Chow might not have as powerful a bite as the lions they resemble, but 220 psi is still among the strongest in the canine world.
