If you live in an apartment, having a dog that loves to bark might not be the best idea. With that in mind, a dog trainer revealed which dog breeds are best suited for apartments.

Andrea Arden, a dog trainer from New York and a familiar face on Animal Planet, spoke with the website The Express to share the best quiet dog breeds. Check out the list:

1. Basenji

The Basenji is a dog breed that cannot bark like other dogs. Their vocal cords are narrower, so they end up sounding more like they’re howling than barking.

2. Newfoundland

Known for their ease in relating to children, even being portrayed as “nanny dogs” in the media, these gentle giants may bark to protect their family, but they’re not dogs known for barking at everything.

3. Borzoi

If you’re willing to provide the Borzoi with the physical exercise they require, they are perfect dogs if you’re looking for a very quiet dog that will rarely bark.

4. Akita

These Japanese dogs are known to be well-mannered when it comes to noise. They are very protective and may bark if they think their family is in potential danger, but good training to ensure they are not fearful of strangers should be enough.

Arden’s list also includes the Australian Cattle Dog, the Bernese Mountain Dog, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Chow Chow, the English Bulldog, the Saluki, the Saint Bernard, the Scottish Deerhound, the Shiba Inu, and the Whippet.

“Basically, it’s about developing a relationship with your dog so they’re happy to respond to your requests. In the case of barking, the request would be for a behavior that makes them focus on you and stop barking,” she explained to The Express.
